| Cadiz
is the longest constantly inhabited city in western europe, with
a history back to the Phoenicians. The middle ages saw a decline
in it's fortunes but when the river up to Seville started to silt
up Cadiz saw its fortunes change. The period was the discovery
of the new worlds and the port saw rapid growth, this in turn
brought great wealth as trade flourished with the new colonies
somewhat to the cost of Seville.
The apartment, part of an old merchants house, is situated alongside
one of the site seeing routes that reflect the trade era. These
are marked with coloured lines that guide you round the city.
A vigorous renovation program has been in place over the last
few years which has resulted the city being restored to much of
it's former glory.
2012 sees the bicentennial of the Spanish constitution, the celebrations
will be based in Cadiz.
The
geographical importance of Cadiz as an international shipping
port has resulted in it being very well served by the train and
bus service. There is now a water shuttle running from the main
port a few hundred meters from the apartment.
Cadiz is also famous for it's Carnival, regarded by many as the
best in europe. The city also boasts some of the most spectacular
religious processions, not just at Easter.
